After being the main town of the top part of the Marche county, the town has been the capital of the Creuse county since 1790. It claims high and proud its urban pole situation emerging from a largely preserved nature. Its proximity with the Guéret Hills, the Chabrière forest, in between the Creuse and Gartempe rivers make it a strategic centre for a multitude of activities: VTT, trail, paragliding… The arts are largely represented : La Guérétoise de spectacles, Cultural Centre, gigs are regularly organised at the André Lejeune avant-gardist hall.
