Tumulus de Quenouille

Rural heritage in Peyrat-le-Château
  • This tumulus is a burial mound. The small tower at its center is a later construction. Once very numerous, grouped in tumulair fields on peaks and ridges, Limousin mountain burial mounds can be identified by their sub-circular screes. Excavation of these mounds, which can be dated from the 8th century AD to the 1st century AD, frequently reveals an internal architecture protected by a stone covering; a central feature often houses a cinerary urn, and sometimes a burial site.
