Porte Saint Jean à La Souterraine

This pointed-arched gateway is the city's best-known landmark and its symbol. The original building, with its rectangular base, was extensively altered and raised in the 15th century. At a height of 20 m, it is flanked by two round, corbelled turrets and crowned with machicolated battlements for effective defense. All that remains of the curtain walls that once supported the gate is the beginning, without its battlements and machicolations (height 13 m.)
Above the gateway, you can see the former passageway for the wooden beams that supported the drawbridge chains and enabled it to be raised.
