The Combes de la Cazine site is located in north-west Creuse. It is easily accessible from the village of Colondannes, where it is signposted. The name alone evokes the two key features of the area: rocky escarpments and a river. Les Combes, forming narrow valleys, are linked to a geological fault aligned from west to east. This shear zone exposes the granite formations of the area, revealing micro-cliffs and boulders of varying sizes. This rugged strip crosses the northern part of the site and naturally favours heather moorland.
Irrigating the entire study area, the Cazine resembles an artery; the river criss-crosses the valley, which widens as soon as it leaves the faulted area, giving way to gentler slopes and greener landscapes.
