in the 1870s, Abbé Jamot, parish priest of Roches, fearing the arrival of Protestantism in his parish, decided to seek divine protection through the Blessed Virgin. He therefore purchased a cast-iron statue of Mary Immaculate, 4 m high. in the 1870s, Abbé Jamot, parish priest of Roches, fearing the arrival of Protestantism in his parish, decided to seek divine protection through the Blessed Virgin. He therefore purchased a cast-iron statue of Mary Immaculate, 4 m high. It was set on a stone plinth atop a rocky chaos, facing the median, in a position of offering or invitation. The statue was brought by train from Toulouse to Ajain, and carried by oxen to the foot of the rock. A recently restored granite cross welcomes pilgrims to this remarkable site. Legend has it that a local woman deposited a small purse of gold coins beneath the statue.
