A total of five large-format tapestries inspired by four of his greatest masterpieces will see the light of day in Aubusson before the eyes of visitors until the end of 2023: Princess Mononoke, The Journey of Chihiro, The Walking CastleandNausicaä, the Valley of the Wind.
When the centuries-old know-how of Aubusson tapestry meets the colorful and committed universe of the talented Japanese animated film director, it promises an exceptional hanging-event!”
Miyazaki in a few words…
For those who do not know this genius creator, he works in the early stages of his career with various studios. We owe him television series such as Heidi, the little girl from the Alps (1974).
He co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Takahata and directed ten animated films, including The Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki the little witch (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997). The Voyage of Chihiro (2001) broke all box office records in Japan and received numerous awards, including the Golden Bear for Best Film at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2002 and the Oscar for Best Animated Film. The Walking Castle (2004) received the Osella Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 2004.

A true technical challenge
This new adventure of hanging-event allows visitors to appreciate the entire process of making an Aubusson tapestry: choosing the model and materials, perfecting the cardboard, weaving and finally falling off the loom.
Inspired by the work of Miyazaki, it is a real challenge, not only for the cartonnier but also for the lissiers (people who weave the tapestry): it is a matter, in an exceptional way, of going from an animated image to a frozen image, in textile material.
Each tapestry will require nearly a year of weaving, so many opportunities to return to the Cité de la tapisserie.
To discover during the visit:
- A space dedicated to the imagination of Hayao Miyazaki in Aubusson tapestry where visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the project thanks to models of the tapestries. In the background of the room is animated on the wall, an excerpt from the film, associated with a text summarizing the scene. When the excerpt brings up the image of the model, an enlargement of the future tapestry to scale is projected on the wall.
- Workshops for young audiences, to learn about the art of Aubusson tapestry and the world of Miyazaki
- The visit to the Weaving Workshop, an opportunity to discover the imposing 8-meter long loom on which the weavers bring the tapestry to life
