The Valley of the Painters

Valley of the painters

The valley of the painters between Berry and Limousin, it is the north of the Valley of the Creuse “Everything there inflames the imagination… everything there clutches the heart” says George Sand, amazed, discovering Crozant. This landscape is “so rich that the painter does not know where to stop”

she said then.

In the footsteps of impressionist painters!

Claude Monet, Armand Guillaumin, Francis Picabia, among others, immortalize the landscapes of the confluence of the two Creuse rivers, the banks of the Sedelle, the ancient-fortress-of-Crozant, the light, rocks and heather of this Valley, through their impressionist works.

Hundreds of artists put down their easels in the heart of this preserved and wild nature, on the steep paths of this valley, as our contemporary artists continue to do, following in their footsteps. You can do the same by walking in their footsteps, your discovery booklet in hand, and follow the Painters’ Trail, a short loop marked with bookmarks honoring the work of Claude Monet.

Exhibition places !

Many exhibitions can be seen notably at the Espace Monet-Rollinat of Fresselines or at the Musée d’Art et d’Archéologieof Guéret, which has dedicated a room to impressionist painting. You can also push open the doors of the many painters’ workshopseach one more talented than the other and all committed to showcasing their beloved Creuse.

Without forgetting 2 superb sites open to visit: theHotel Lépinat and the Espace Monet-Rollinat, modern sites, using new technologies, dedicated to the history of the Valley’s Painters.

Activities of a thousand colors

Rich with its varied landscapes, the valley also offers many activities whether you are sporty or contemplative. Water, our precious element, lends itself to swimming from the banks arranged for family games, to the playful sport practiced on board canoes or pedal boats, or to the boat ride to discover its shores “differently”. For the more adventurous, climbing can also be practiced on the steep cliffs of our gorges for intense emotions.

Finally, for garden lovers, come and appreciate this beautiful harmony that reigns in this valley, between man and nature, during your visits to the Arboretum de la Sédelle or to the Jardins Clos du Préfons.

Today, the Valley has changed somewhat, but nature retains control for other painters to plant their easels so that their eyes and hearts can compose their landscape works in turn.
