"The imagination of Hayao Miyazaki in Aubusson tapestry

Hayao Miyazaki invites himself to the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie in Aubusson

After the project “Aubusson weaves Tolkien”, the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie d’Aubusson has decided to honor a very famous master of Japanese animation: Hayao Miyazaki. Thus, a new event-hanging is going to be made to transport you to the imaginary world of the sumptuous films of this virtuoso of Japanese drawing.

But who is Hayao Miyazaki?

Hayao Miyazaki is a famous director of animated films. Among his most famous films, these titles may evoke some memories: “Princess Mononoke”, “Chihiro’s Journey” or even the “Walking Castle” are the fruits of his imagination. This incredible director has received numerous awards including a “Golden Lion” award (the highest award at the Venice Film Festival) for his entire film career. He has also published multiple books, drawings and poems.

A titanic project

The City signed in July 2019, an agreement with Studio Ghibli, whose Hayao Miyazaki is the co-founder with Isao Takahata. This weaving project is entitled “Hayao Miyazaki’s Imagination in Aubusson Tapestry”. The objective is to create a hanging representing images from films which allows us to offer a mediation tool accessible to all.

In the continuity of the project“Aubusson weaves Tolkien”, the goal is to bring back to the taste of the day the hangings, which had fallen into disuse. Indeed, a hanging is a large woven piece, composed of several tapestries. A decorative tool, the hanging also allows one to characterize one’s social milieu and constitutes a prestigious work. The difficulty of the realization of this work will reside in its dimension since a hanging measures several meters long but also in its adaptation since it is a question of reproducing images in movement in frozen images.

The chosen works

The images of the films were selected in agreement with Studio Ghibli. Thus, through this hanging, you will be able to find scenes from the films:“Princess Mononoke”, from the “Journey of Chihiro”, from the “Moving Castle” or even from “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”.

The realization of this majestic piece will begin in 2021 with the weaving of a scene taken from “Princess Mononoke” and will be completed in 2023 with the weaving of the scene of the “Fear of Hauru” from “The Walking Castle”.

In the meantime, the Miyazaki space, which will open in October 2020, will allow visitors to view scale images of the future tapestries, understand the steps involved in making the hanging and discover the behind-the-scenes of this new adventure.
